I've often thought that small local newspapers, often owned by some of the wealthiest and most conservative individuals (or families) in a given community, were a some of the worst offenders when it came to spreading misinformation and conservative propaganda. Over at Borev.Net, there is a great takedown of a ridiculous piece on Ecuador in a small Pennsylvania newspaper. The intro via Borev.Net was just too good not to post here:
Remember when Americans were quaintly naïve about foreign lands? When temptation to travel “abroad” was quickly tempered by the knowledge that foreign customs might make us a bit uncomfortable, that exotic food might give us gas, and that those alluring vices might just lead us away from our personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Back when we took some slightly-smug comfort in the fact that there probably wasn’t anything that ol’ Pay-Ree’s got that you can’t find right here in Millsboro, at least nothing that's worth seeing, anyway?
Well let’s relive those happy days of ignorance and pre-9/11 fear for a change, shall we, as a small town fattie and his mildly retarded local newspaper warn us of the dangers of travel in Socialist Ecuador.
The most ridiculous part of the small-town article is this:
VanSickle was told that there was a lot of Colombian drug activity taking place in the area, and the current government of Ecuador was preparing for a communist regime. The president was said to be a close friend of Hugo Chavez, the current president of Venezuela, and shared his close relationship with the drug cartel of Colombia. The United States Embassy in Quito advised VanSickle to keep a low profile.
It's hard to know where to start debunking all the shit packed into that paragraph. First off, Ecuador elected a socialist president (Rafael Correa) last year. He is not a communist, and in no way is Ecuador "preparing for a communist regime"...whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean. Secondly, the only South American president with a "close relationship with the drug cartel of Colombia" is the right-wing president of Colombia. Why leftists Chavez and Correa would have a "close relationship" with the right-wing paramilitaries that run most of the Colombian cartels is beyond my reasoning abilities.
One would also think that before claiming that Ecuador plans to shut the Galapagos Islands National Park, that the editor at the newspaper could maybe do a Google search and realize that it's total bullshit.
While he was abroad, VanSickle also traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he said he was safe from Ecuadorian threats against Americans...VanSickle said that because the government plans to close the national park at the popular Galapagos Islands, he wished to visit there one more time.
Fucking Ecuadorian Commies. Why do they hate our freedom?
